  • CRISIS CORPS VOLUNTEERS TO SERVE IN THAILAND.  In response to the tsunami that struck South East Asia on December 26, the Crisis Corps has committed to sending a team of 30 volunteers to Thailand. The initial team of 10 volunteers has been selected and will be deployed in mid-March. The second and third groups will be deployed over the next three months….

  • AMERICORPS PROFESSIONAL CORPS GRANT OPPORTUNITY.  Funding is available to support programs addressing insufficient numbers of qualified professionals in communities. Professional Corps grant applications must identify a community need that is not being met due to the lack of professionals, and create a project that engages AmeriCorps members in service to address that need. AmeriCorps members could serve as teachers, nurses, doctors, emergency medical technicians (EMT), and other health care providers, social workers, early childhood development staff, engineers, lawyers, paralegals, police officers and firefighters, and other professionals. Proposed programs must be multi-state in scope....

  • COLLEGE AND UNIVERSITY POLICE DEPARTMENTS: ENGAGING VOLUNTEERS IN HIGHER EDUCATION SETTINGS.  Despite being an inherently transient population, the university community can help their campus police departments provide valuable crime prevention and public safety services … While the demographics of a school and its surrounding community vary from place to place, many university and college police departments face some of the same issues: college parties with underage drinking, traffic and crowd control at athletic events, and additional homeland security concerns. A university or college police department response can require significant personnel coverage and time. Additionally, with many large-scale events taking place throughout the school year, planning for the safety and security of the entire community also requires good working relationships with surrounding municipalities and law enforcement agencies....
