American History, Civics & Service

All Americans must have a complete understanding of our history to be effective and engaged citizens in our democratic society. Yet according to the U.S. Department of Education's National Assessment of Education Progress study, which tracks both Civics and American History understanding among K-12 students, less than one quarter of America's students are proficient in either subject.

The summer months are an excellent time to answer the President’s Call to Service and give back to your communities. With most schools closed, many individuals, families, and groups have extra time on their hands.... what better way to spend that time than volunteering in your community. Financial Literacy Corps

In the wake of America’s transitioning housing market, USA Freedom Corps (USAFC) and the President's Advisory Council on Financial Literacy now offer a volunteer-driven financial literacy initiative - the Financial Literacy Corps. Through tools and resources, such as the USAFC Volunteer Network and the President’s Volunteer Service Award, USAFC and the President's Advisory Council are mobilizing an army of volunteers to improve individual financial literacy and help homeowners avoid foreclosure.

For Baby Boomers - Get Involved!

Get Involved" is a national awareness and recruitment campaign aimed at the nation’s 77 million baby boomers. Launched in December 2005 by the Corporation for National and Community Service, in collaboration with America’s nonprofit community and private-sector organizations that share a commitment to civic responsibility, the campaign features bilingual newspaper, magazine, radio and television public service announcements (PSAs)

Great Outdoors Month

President Bush has proclaimed June 2008 as “Great Outdoors Month.” In support of Great Outdoors Month, USA Freedom Corps is supporting events across the country to award deserving volunteers the President’s Volunteer Service Award.

National Mentoring Month

First proclaimed by President Bush in 2002, National Mentoring Month is an annual, high-profile campaign to draw attention to the need for more volunteer mentors to help America’s young people achieve their full potential. This year’s theme is “Be the Change: Mentor a Child.”

New Americans Project

The New Americans Project is an initiative of the Task Force on New Americans that seeks to improve access to information for new immigrants and encourage volunteerism among all Americans, including both U.S. citizens and those who are new to the country. President George W. Bush established the Task Force on New Americans on June 7, 2006 in an effort to strengthen the efforts of federal, state, and local agencies in providing immigrants the information they need to embrace the common core of American civic culture, learn English, and fully become American. The New Americans Project will help promote volunteer opportunities for those interested in helping newcomers adjust to life in the United States and opportunities for newcomers to get involved in their communities through volunteer service.

President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll

The President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, launched in 2006, recognizes colleges and universities nationwide that support innovative and effective community service and service-learning programs. The Honor Roll's Presidential Award, given each year to only a handful of institutions, is the highest federal recognition a college or university can receive for its commitment to volunteering, service-learning, and civic engagement. The Honor Roll is a program of the Corporation for National and Community Service, and is sponsored by the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation, the USA Freedom Corps, and the U.S. Departments of Education and Housing and Urban Development.

Relief and Recovery: Midwest Floods

In June 2008, months of heavy precipitation a number of rivers overflowed their banks for several weeks at a time and broke through levees at numerous locations in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, and Wisconsin. The Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), numerous federal agencies, and states and local governments continue to work together in response to ongoing flooding and in preparation for the recovery efforts that will be under way in the days, weeks and months to come.

Relief and Recovery: Tornadoes

The Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) continues to work alongside state, local and non-governmental relief agencies to provide fast and effective response to the severe thunderstorms and tornadoes that swept through Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Mississippi and Tennessee. Specialists from FEMA are on site to support the response efforts already underway, and more federal resources are being sent to meet needs as they arise or are identified.

Relief and Recovery: Tropical Cyclone Nargis

On Friday, May 2, Cyclone Nargis hit southwestern Burma with winds exceeding 190 km per hour (118 mph). Media reports show that an estimated 24 million people live in the affected areas, which includes the heavily-populated city of Yangon. Current government reports indicate tens of thousands of deaths with this number expected to rise. A state of emergency has been declared in five regions, and there are reports of significant damage to electricity, telecommunications, water, fuel, vegetation, and small scale infrastructure. Many homes have been damaged or destroyed; several hundred thousand people are believed to be in need of shelter.

After the hurricanes of 2005, Americans turned to the USA Freedom Corps web site and the USA Freedom Corps Volunteer Network to find service opportunities to help their neighbors in the Gulf Coast. In the months and years ahead, Freedom Corps will continue to be a reference point for Americans wanting to help in the Gulf Coast.

Response and Recovery: Hurricanes Gustav and Ike

On September 1st, Hurricane Gustav made landfall in the United States along the Louisiana coast as a strong Category 2 hurricane. Today, national service participants and volunteers in the Gulf Coast region and across the country are responding in the aftermath of Hurricane Gustav and preparing for Hurricane Ike. The USA Freedom Corps office at the White House and the Corporation for National and Community Service are working in close coordination with numerous federal agencies and state and local leaders to respond to the needs of those affected by the hurricanes.

USA Freedom Corps, the National Park Service, American Recreation Coalition and Task Force on New Americans have created a public-private partnership, This Land is Your Land, to engage more new Americans in volunteer and recreation opportunities, particularly in America’s National Parks.

Universities Rebuilding America Partnership (URAP)

On November 1, 2005, U.S. Housing and Urban Development Secretary Alphonso Jackson and Corporation for National and Community Service CEO David Eisner, launched the Universities Rebuilding America Partnership (URAP) at Louisiana State University. The new program will offer resources and support to engage college and university students, faculty and staff in helping rebuild the Gulf Coast region.
