Communities and nonprofits across the country are gearing up for a record number of volunteers on the Martin Luther King Jr. Federal holiday, fueled by President-elect Obama’s call for Americans to serve on King Day and throughout the year.

12/31/2008 President Bush, President-Elect Obama, and General Powell To Headline National Mentoring Month
President George W. Bush, President-elect Barack Obama, and General Colin L. Powell will headline the Eighth Annual National Mentoring Month volunteer recruitment drive, it was announced today. Held each January, the campaign mobilizes community volunteers to help young people achieve their full potential.

12/5/2008 Peace Corps Announces Volunteerism Initiative
Peace Corps Director Ronald A. Tschetter today unveiled the V2 volunteerism initiative, with a Volunteerism Action Guide designed to support host country volunteerism overseas. The V2 Action Guide will help Peace Corps Volunteers motivate and inspire host country communities to engage in more service activities.

Today marks the 18th anniversary of Congress signing into law the Take Pride in America Program. On November 28, 1990, the 101st Congress established Take Pride in America to promote the appreciation and stewardship of public lands.

11/26/2008 St. Bernard Project Cofounder Named CNN Hero of the Year
Liz McCartney, cofounder of a Louisiana nonprofit that engages volunteers and AmeriCorps members to rebuild homes destroyed by Hurricane Katrina, was named the 2008 CNN Hero of the Year at a ceremony Saturday night in Hollywood.

11/25/2008 NFL Players to be Honored with the President's Volunteer Service Award
USA Freedom Corps, President Bush's initiative to promote volunteer service among Americans, today announced that National Football League (NFL) players will be honored with the President's Volunteer Service Award for their remarkable volunteer service, particularly by promoting the importance of fitness and health among youth through the NFL’s PLAY 60 campaign. Members of the President's Council on Service and Civic Participation and the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, as well as senior White House staff, will present awards to players from the 12 home teams on Sunday, November 30, and the remaining awards will be presented to players from the remainder of the 32 teams throughout the season.
