Americans have answered the President’s Call to Service by volunteering at historically high levels, which remain higher today than in 2002 and in previous decades. Volunteers are an essential asset for organizations that rely on volunteer assistance to provide critical social services in communities, both urban and rural, at home and abroad. Recognizing that service plays a critical role in addressing some of our toughest social problems USA Freedom Corps is partnering with federal agencies to highlight volunteer opportunities and recognize America’s volunteers for their contributions to building healthy communities and meeting critical needs.

 

Department of Agriculture

In the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan area, there are approximately 633,000 residents at risk of, or experiencing hunger. (U.S. Census Bureau, 2000). The poverty rate for school children ages 5 - 17 nationally is 34.5 percent; in D.C. it is 51.3 percent, the highest in the nation. This translates to 200,000 children at risk of hunger in the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Area – 56,000 in the District alone or 1 in 2 children.

Department of Health and Human Services

In September 2008, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services partnered with USA Freedom Corps to hold an award ceremony honoring volunteersof Pregnancy Resource Centers (PRC). PRCs have long been a priority of Admiral Joxel Garcia, Assistant Secretary for health and the head of the U.S. Public Health Service. Volunteers are essential to theoperations of the centers.Their services, which are provided almost entirely by unpaid volunteers, empower women to be able to give birth to healthy babies.

Department of Homeland Security

Citizen Corps is the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA's) nationwide grass-roots effort which encourages community and government leaders to come together to involve community members and organizations in all-hazards emergency preparedness, planning, mitigation, response, and recovery.

Department of Interior

In an effort to strengthen health services throughout the Insular areas, USA Freedom Corps and the U.S. Department of the Interior are partnering together for a volunteer-driven “Insular Area Health Initiative.” This initiative mobilizes skilled volunteers such as doctors, nurses, and other medical professionals in service at hospitals and health-related nonprofits throughout the island territories and freely associated states.

Department of Veterans Affairs

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) relies heavily on the generous contributions of volunteers to help veterans access the care and benefits afforded them. Due to changes in the level of funding for the Beneficiary Travel program the VA was forced to seek alternative methods for transporting eligible veterans to VA facilities and/or authorized facilities. In 1987, Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Volunteer Transportation Network (VTN) was established to assist veterans in receiving reimbursement for transportation costs; today it exists for any veteran needing to be physically driven to a location to receive VA services.

Helping America's Youth is a nationwide effort to raise awareness about the challenges facing our youth, particularly at-risk boys, and to motivate caring adults to connect with youth in three key areas: family, school, and community.As the leader of the Helping America's Youth effort, Mrs. Laura Bushishighlighting programs which are effectively helping America's young people.

Volunteering Internationally

The American people have a long tradition of extending a hand to those in need, including our neighbors overseas. International volunteer service is an extension of our Nation’s compassion and show of goodwill. Indeed, in this time of great challenge, the USA Freedom Corps is dedicated to making it easier for more Americans to volunteer internationally. As the President says, the true strength of our nation is not in our military might, but in the hearts and souls of our people.
