New Volunteering in America Website
to be Launched on Monday

USA Freedom Corps and the Corporation for National and Community Service will launch a new website on Monday, July 28th, "Volunteering in America", highlighting volunteer trends throughout the United States. Users can access volunteering statistics and information for the nation, U.S. regions, states and major cities. Users will also be able to see how states and cities rank by volunteer rates and volunteer hours.

The site features information on new research findings, customizable reports, information on how people volunteer and helpful tools and training links including volunteer retention, recruitment, "voluntourism", human capital strategies and cost saving approaches. Visit the website to take a quiz and find out how much you know about volunteering in America, the answers may surprise you!

USDA Calls on Volunteers
to Help Fight Hunger

USDA Secretary Ed Schafer recently announced the "Fight Hunger Initiative," an effort to engage all citizens in the fight against hunger in communities across America. The U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) new online toolkit offers a step-by-step guide on how to help neighbors in need, from volunteering at a food drive to planting community gardens. The toolkit includes additional resources to help you learn more about USDA food and nutrition programs.

President Bush Greets 650th Volunteer

Through the USA Freedom Corps' Presidential Greeter Program, local volunteers are selected to greet the President upon his arrival at cities nationwide. Honorees, chosen through a nomination, interview, and vetting process, are invited to participate in the official greeting party that welcomes the President during his travels. USA Freedom Corps Greeters are thanked by the President, presented with the President's Volunteer Service Award lapel pin, and photographed under the Presidential seal on Air Force One. Since the program's inception, more than 650 Americans have been honored as USA Freedom Corps Greeters.

National Organizations Selected
to Lead 2009 King Day of Service

The growing movement to make the King Holiday a national day of service will get a powerful boost from the leadership of seven national organizations selected for King Day of Service grants from the Corporation for National and Community Service.

Building on the momentum from last year, these organizations will activate their networks, reach out to new partners, mobilize volunteers, and provide cross-sector leadership for the annual King Day of Service, which next year falls on January 19, 2009.

President George W. Bush presented the President's Volunteer Service Award to Ashley Knight upon arrival in Olathe, Kansas, on Thursday, May 29, 2008. Knight, 25, is a volunteer with Students Take Action and YouthFriends.
