Almaty Office, Kazakhstan

In August 1998, CNS established its NIS Representative Office (NISRO) in Almaty, Kazakhstan to facilitate CNS research, community-building, and outreach activities in the NIS and to provide a unique resource for nonproliferation specialists in the NIS. The office is headed by executive director Dauren Aben.

NISRO organizes seminars and conferences in the former Soviet Union on various WMD and nonproliferation issues. Most recently, NISRO has facilitated organization of workshops on implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1540 in Kyrgyzstan and Central Asia and the Caucasus. Past events have also been held for journalists, bioscientists, and export control and other government officials. In addition, the office has conducted conferences for NISNP Core Group members. The Almaty office is also actively involved in CNS research and publication projects, most recently in the production of the International Export Control Observer (in English and in Russian).
