universitIes & colleges
special interest Committee
The mission of the Universities & Colleges Committee is to represent the emergency management issues
surrounding college and university campuses. Although they are a part of the communities in which they
reside, higher education institutions take on special and sometimes unique considerations when
preparing their students, faculty, staff and visitors for responding to, recovering from and mitigating
against emergencies. The purpose of this committee is to provide emergency managers from higher education institutions a voice on a national and international scale to ensure their needs are also being addressed by government and industry officials.

Higher Education Opportunity Act Amendments
During the IAEM 2008 Mid-Year Meeting, the Universities & Colleges Special Interest Committee drafted an issue paper recommending that the IAEM Board support certain provisions of S.1642 and reject certain provisions of H.R.4137 and H.R.5735 as they related to the Higher Education Act. IAEM President Mike Selves, CEM, moved, seconded by Russ Decker, CEM, to adopt the position and to give the Committee approval to take action consistent with the concepts presented. The motion passed by unanimous vote on June 7, 2008.
On Aug. 14, 2008, President George W. Bush signed legislation to renew the Higher Education Act.
