IEEE 693 Committee Members Meet at UB/Provide Input to Research
An MCEER workshop and IEEE 693 committee meeting at the University at Buffalo addressed seismic design issues of electric power substations and provided input to MCEER Research.

UB CSEE, SEESL, MCEER Host IEEE 693 Meeting
Members of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Working Group IEEE 693, held their fall 2008 meeting on October 22-23. The group focused its attention on the IEEE 693 standard for “Recommended Practice for Seismic Design of Substations.” Learn more
Filiatrault Elected MCEER Director
Andre Filiatrault, Ph.D., Eng., a professor at the University at Buffalo and leading expert on shake-table testing of structural and nonstructural building components, has been elected to a two-year term as director of MCEER. Filiatrault previously served as deputy director of MCEER. He succeeds Michel Bruneau who stepped down from his MCEER post at the end of August.
Post-Gustav Reconnaissance Available
MCEER's post-Hurricane Gustav reconnaissance team investigated various aspects of hurricane-stricken Louisiana. The investigation focused on two specific topics:
The emergency preparedness team was funded by the National Science Foundation and led by Daniel Hess, Department of Urban and Regional Planning, University at Buffalo and Lucy Arendt, School of Business, University of Wisconsin, Green Bay. Ronald Eguchi of ImageCat, inc. and the MCEER Remote Sensing Institute led the remote sensing effort.

Seminar: The 512 Wenchuan Earthquake of China
George C. Lee, SUNY Distinquished Professor and Samuel P. Capen, Professor of Engineering, presented a seminar titled The 512 Wenchuan Earthquake of China on June 16, 2008 at the University at Buffalo. He summarized preliminary observations gathered from the internet, media, and earthquake engineering colleagues and contacts in China, and suggested possible lessons learned for structural engineers.
Michel Bruneau bids “farewell” as MCEER Director, August 31
With MCEER’s future firmly entrenched in continued pursuit of engineering solutions for earthquakes as well as multiple hazards, Michel Bruneau will “pass the torch” as center director on August 31. After having served for 10 years in the leadership of MCEER, Bruneau calls this a “time for fresh ideas and new energies” to build on the strengths of the center. He is serving on a committee tasked by the Dean of the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences at the University at Buffalo, to develop recommendations for the new leadership of MCEER.
Sixth National Seismic Conference on Bridges & Highways held in Charleston
The Sixth National Seismic Conference on Bridges & Highways was held July 27-30, 2008 in Charleston, South Carolina. Organized by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), the Transportation Research Board (TRB), the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) and MCEER, University at Buffalo, under the theme “Seismic Technologies for Extreme Loads,” this sixth conference in a series focused on earthquake risk and included discussions on hurricanes, flooding, and other hazards.
George Lee Honored by White House
George C. Lee was among 11 people to receive a 2006 Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring (PAESMEM) from President George W. Bush in a ceremony at the White House.
