Dates: June 20-24, 2005
Course Information: The Emergency
Management Institute in conjunction with the Economic Development
Administration will conduct the Disaster Resistant Jobs:
Strategies for Community Emergency and Economic Risk Management
in fiscal year (FY) 2005. The intention of this course is to raise
the awareness of communities throughout the nation to the needs
of protecting the economic base from hazards. Small and medium businesses
provide nearly 80% of jobs in any given community but are also at
the highest risk of failure when affected by a disaster. Through
mitigation and preparedness, this figure can be greatly reduced
and insure the economic health of the community.
In this course, students are provided information
they can use to reach the small business owner and help them find
simple solutions to reducing the effects of hazards. These range
from data backup to mitigation from floods, wind and earthquakes
as well as working with their employees who may also be affected
by the disaster. Each student will be required to make a presentation
to the class as if they were addressing a service club gathering,
meeting with local business people or a town council session.
Course Length: 4 days. Course starts
Monday at 8:30 a.m. and ends Thursday at 5:00 p.m. Buses depart
from the NETC campus Friday at 9:30 a.m.

development staff and officials, Chamber of Commerce staff and others
