This Integrated Emergency Management Course (IEMC) focuses on preparing for and responding to a major hazardous materials incident. The IEMC: Hazardous Material is an exercise based course. Participants are selected to fill specific roles based on their actual positions, and are given the opportunity to share their professional knowledge with other students during a variety of course exercises focusing on hazardous materials incidents. This exercise-based course is conducted for a multi-discipline audience. Participants come from various communities from throughout the country. The IEMC places public officials and other key community leaders in a disaster simulation. The course methodologies of classroom instruction, planning sessions, and exercises allow for structured decision making in a learning environment that is nonetheless realistic.
The exercises will be conducted jointly with the National Fire Academy (NFA) students in the Executive Analysis of Fire Service Operations in Emergency Management (EAFSOEM) course.

IEMCs stress the integration of functions, resources, organizations, and individuals in all phases of emergency management.
IEMCs immerse participants in the practical application of operations associated with emergency operations center (EOC) management. Each course includes orientation presentations to specific response functions as well as a simulated emergency situation that participants must cope within a high-stress EOC environment.
