Coastal Hazard Bulletin

Issue No. 3

The purpose of the Coastal Hazard Mailing List is to provide up-to-date coastal flood hazard information pertinent to the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the National Flood Insurance Program. Subscribers will receive new mailings on a monthly basis.

Schedule of CHAMP Database Development

CHAMP is composed of six sub-programs. The Bulletin schedule for developing these individual programs for your CHAMP database is presented below.

CHAMP Program and Bulletin Date:

A summary of these programs is presented in the 'General Operating Procedure for Running CHAMP' flowchart on page 4 of the CHAMP User's Manual. This document is available through the CHAMP Help Menu or at: http://www.fema.gov/plan/prevent/fhm/dl_champ.shtm.

The User's Manual should be used for description of the detailed operating procedures of the CHAMP database for this and future bulletin mailings.

Development of Program 1 - Transect Description/Parameter Entry

Program 1 includes three tasks, which are discussed in detail on pp.10-17, and summarized on p.21 (Steps 1-3) of the User's Manual.

Flooding Source: Atlantic Ocean

1% SWEL: 11.0 ft

10% SWEL: 6.6 ft

Mean High Water Elev: - 2 ft

Mean Low Water Elev: -2 ft

Fetch Length: 24 miles (considered unlimited)

Significant wave Height: 28 ft

Deepwater Wave Period: 11.7 sec

Wave Setup Magnitude: 2 ft

Other Flooding Source: Inland Bay; 1% SWEL: 7 ft (only for transect 2)

Helpful Hints

Import Data Filter - In the Import Wizard Step 2, transect data can be filtered if import data sets are large (i.e., LIDAR elevation data). Data can be filtered by the change in slope along the profile. Simply enter the minimal absolute angle (in degrees) allowed between any three consecutive data points at the bottom of the Step 2 window. If the angle made by the three points is less than the given angle, the middle point will be removed from the imported transect.

Transect Addition, Deletion, or Renaming - To add, delete, or rename a transect, click on the 'Transect' Menu from the initial 'Project Information' window. Three items in the drop-down menu include Edit, Add, or Delete transect. Selecting one of these options brings up an additional window to perform the required operation.

Preparation for the August 2001 Bulletin

In preparation for the August 2001 Bulletin, you should simply complete the exercise discussed in Part 2 above, and briefly familiarize yourself with the six CHAMP sub-programs as discussed in the User's Manual.

Next month, we will continue to develop your CHAMP database by working on Program 2 - Transect Data Entry & Editing.
