DAS Building Division

The State Building Division is responsible for providing centralized procurement, operation, maintenance, security and management of office space and independent review, analysis, and oversight of capital construction projects to insure that the most appropriate facilities are provided for the efficient functioning of state government.

In fulfilling it's purpose, the building division 1) leases all privately-owned office and storage space on behalf of state agencies, provides space planning and coordinates space assignments within such leased space as well as state-owned space; 2) coordinates statewide comprehensive facility planning, reviews capital construction request, program statements and related contracts and provides reports and recommendations to the Governor and Legislature; 3) provides project planning and construction management for selected state agencies and State Building Division managed facilities; 4) manages and maintains state-owned buildings and properties including central office buildings, laboratory facilities and 24 hour care facilities; 5) manages and maintains related parking facilities; 6) provides 24 hour security to the Capitol/NSOB Complex, Omaha State Office Building and the Hastings Regional Center facility; 7) provides free public tours of and promotional information and gift items related to the State Capitol, a National Historic Landmark; and 8) implements orders of the Vacant Building and Excess Land Committee on the sale, demolition or other disposition of vacant buildings and excess state property.

 

MAINTENANCE CENTRALIZATION

Centralized maintenance responsibility dictated by the Legislature in 1995 with the passage of LB530 has been the main focus for several years. Transfer of maintenance budgets to the division (and separation from agency program budgets) provides greater stability, consistency, and the ability to adequately plan for maintenance activities and projects. Thanks to these incentives, staff know they can use any savings generated through improved procedures to work on other needed projects.
