This course emphasized the following key points in relation to conducting multi-hazard emergency planning for schools:
- Emergency planning is proactive, enabling schools and communities to reduce the frequency and magnitude of emergencies and to respond faster and more appropriately.
- A comprehensive Emergency Operations Plan should be risk-based, and should address all hazards including natural, technological, and humanmade hazards.
- Emergency management is an organized, four-phase process by which communities prepare for hazards that cannot be prevented or mitigated, respond to emergencies that occur, recover from emergencies to restore the community to its pre-emergency state, and mitigate risks.
