DF-505: Workplace Violence

Purpose of Course:

FEMA 1200.1 (November 2000) states it is the policy of FEMA to strive to minimize the likelihood of violence in the workplace through early intervention.
Training addressing employee to employee violence has been implemented.  Yet, In recent years there has been increased violence from outside persons. This training is needed to help prepare employees with the knowledge to help avoid violent incidents and what actions to take.

It is the Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) policy to promote a safe environment for its employees. It covers not only acts of physical violence, but threats, harassment, intimidation, and other disruptive behavior. Such behavior can include oral or written statements, gestures, or expressions that communicate a direct or indirect threat of physical harm. (Department of Homeland Security Workplace Violence Prevention Procedures, July 2006)

Course Objectives:

The goal of this course is to give employees awareness of violence in the workplace, how to recognize the warning signs, and what actions to take to prevent or minimize violence.

At the completion of training, the course participants will be able to:

  1. Define workplace violence in accordance with the FEMA 1200.1 policy and the DHS memo referenced in the course.
  2. List the 4 types of work place violence.
  3. Identify 3 warning signs or behaviors of potential workplace violence.
  4. List the action steps taken in response to workplace violence.
  5. Identify 3 ways to prevent workplace violence.

Target Audience:

FEMA Field employees serving in the JFO.

Approximate Time:

45 minutes to 1 hour.
