FEMA's Multi-Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment
The Federal Emergency Management Agency's "Multi-Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment" document is now available on-line. As part of the agency's national effort to mitigate human and economic loss caused by disasters, FEMA initiated a research project to clarify and document previous efforts to identify natural and technological hazards and to assess associated risks. Subsequently, this document was prepared to summarize the findings. It reviews virtually all atmospheric, geologic, hydrologic, and other natural hazards, as well as numerous technological risks. It then summarizes several risk assessment approaches and identifies the various activities that compose the National Mitigation Strategy. It concludes with a summary and numerous appendices.

In 1999 students at the University of Richmond organized Rho Epsilon Mu as a specialized honor society for emergency management, with the intent that this society should become a national society for the discipline, regardless of departmental or program title. The name Rho Epsilon Mu, written in Greek letters as PEM, was chosen as a reference to professional emergency management.The society is specifically intended to include programs in emergency management, disaster science, and business continuity. Students must be regularly enrolled and pursuing emergency management as a major or recognized minor.Rho Epsilon Mu is actively soliciting the formation of new chapters and will be happy to work with any college or university interested in doing so.

The Seattle Emergency Management Website
The Seattle Emergency Management website serves as an example of a 21st century Office of Emergency Management. Emergency Management administers and directs two programs: in preparedness, the Seattle Disaster Aid and Response Teams (SDART) and Project Impact, a permanent community mitigation program of the City. Another important aspect of the website is an on-line disaster plan, Seattle Disaster and Response Plan, for the city of Seattle. This comprehensive plan prepares the citizens of Seattle for a large-scale disaster.
