This pathfinder contains electronic resources relating to scientific and technological sites of Brazil. For information about additional resources at the Library of Congress, consult its online catalog (http://catalog.loc.gov).

The most important source for bibliography of books and articles in the humanities and social sciences concerning Brazil is the annual Handbook of Latin American Studies (http://lcweb2.loc.gov/hlas/) produced by over 160 contributing editors under the editorship of the Hispanic Division of the Library of Congress. The Handbook is available in selected libraries in book form.

One of the major aggregators for links to a wide variety of subjects relating to Brazilian science and technology is the University of Texas' LANIC (http://lanic.utexas.edu/la/brazil/science/).


ANEEL: Agência Nacional de Energia Elétrica (http://www.aneel.gov.br)
Brazilian Electricity Regulatory Agency. Includes links to electric power distribution, legislation, energy efficiency, research and development, tariffs, oversight and investigations, and a virtual library. In Portuguese and English.

ANP: Agência Nacional do Petróleo, Gás Natural e Biocombustíveis (http://www.anp.gov.br)
National Petroleum Agency. Includes news, glossary, petroleum legislation, publications, relating to oil drilling, programs for nature conservancy, and environment. In Portuguese.

Centro de Lançamento Alcântara (http://www.cla.aer.mil.br)
General information on the Alcantara rocket launch station. Includes history, operations, views, its relationship with other stations throughout the world and associated links. In Portuguese.

Departamento de Cooperação Científica, Técnica e Tecnológica: MRE (http://www.dct.mre.gov.br/)
Provides history, description, activities, structure, and functions of the Department of Scientific, Technical and Technological Cooperation of the Ministry of Foreign Relations. In Portuguese, some links in English.

Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais (http://www.inpe.br/)
National Institute for Space Research, Ministry of Science and Technology. INPE’s mission is to foster scientific research and technological applications in space and atmospheric sciences and applications and space engineering and technology. Includes links to in institute’s history, mission, research, education and documentation, products and services, and institutional relations. In English and Portuguese.

Instituto Tecnológico de Aeronáutica: ITA (http://www.ita.cta.br)
Federal government institution dedicated to providing high level education and research in science and technology areas of interest to the aerospace sector in general, and especially to the Aeronautical Command. Provides a general description of the school, information on the student body, lists of graduate and post-graduate courses, news, and a cultural agenda. In Portuguese and English.

Web site of the Ministry of Science and Technology. Includes information on its organization, functions and responsibilities. Links to research departments and associations. In Portuguese.

Virtual service reference for science and technology in Brazil. Contains information about organizations, databases in Brazil and abroad, publications (dictionaries, encyclopedias, periodicals), libraries, archives, museums, researchers, events, post-graduate programs, online support, the Amazon portal, and much more. In Portuguese.

SciELO Brazil (scientific electronic library online). Publication of the Escola Nacional de Saúde Pública, Fundação Oswaldo Cruz. Publishes. An electronic virtual library covering a selected collection of Brazilian scientific journals with original articles on public health in general and related disciplines such as epidemiology, parasitology, nutrition, environmental health, and applied social sciences. Provides access to full text of articles through SciELO interface with title browse, author index, and subject index. In English, Portuguese, and Spanish.
