This pathfinder contains electronic resources on organizations of Brazil. Estimates of the numbers of associations and organizations in Brazil range from 14,000 to 220,000, including sports clubs, schools, social clubs, and neighborhood associations. Studies have indicated that the 400 largest organizations represent 90 percent of activity in the sector.

For information about additional resources at the Library of Congress, consult its online catalog (http://catalog.loc.gov). The most important source for bibliography of books and articles concerning Brazil is the annual Handbook of Latin American Studies (http://lcweb2.loc.gov/hlas/) produced by over 160 contributing editors under the editorship of the Hispanic Division of the Library of Congress. The Handbook is available in selected libraries in book form. One of the major aggregators for links to a wide variety of subjects relating to Brazil is the University of Texas' LANIC (http://lanic.utexas.edu/la/brazil/) site.

ABONG - Associação Brasileira de Organizações Não Governamentais (http://www.abong.org.br/)
Founded in 1991 and with 270 member associations as of November 2005, the Brazilian Association of Nongovernmental Organizations (ABONG) collectively represents the interests of Brazilian NGOs and promotes communication and connections among NGOs dedicated to strengthening democracy and civil rights. Members organizations work in the areas of regional development, human rights, public policy, agricultural issues, urban issues, and environmental and ecological issues. Site contains contact information for each of eight regional ABONG centers. Links to online articles, laws, and other documents related to NGOs, as well as a database of projects and publications of member associations, and governmental, international, and national organizations whose work impacts the NGOs. The Monte Azul Community Association conducts integrated social work in three favela's (slums) in São Paulo, Brazil. DHNET - Direitos e Desejos Humanos No Ciberespaco (http://www.dhnet.org.br/inedex.htm)
Established online in 1995, the Human Rights and Culture Net was founded by human rights activists and focuses on the following themes: human rights/desires; cyber citizenry; historical memory; education and human rights; and art and culture. Links include databases, online texts, and/or bibliographies, legislative documents notices of events and activities as well as to national and international organizations. Site also includes an audio archive and a video archive of materials related to human rights. In Portuguese.

Fórum Social Mundial - World Social Forum (http://www.forumsocialmundial.org.br/)
World Social Forum is an open meeting place where social movements, networks, NGOs, and other civil society organizations opposed to neo-liberalism and a world dominated by capital or by any form of imperialism come together to pursue their thinking, debate ideas democratically, formulate proposals, share experiences freely, and network for effective action to create an alternative to the neo-liberalist model. Includes links to documents pertaining to past and future World Forum conference agendas, presentations at workshops and seminars, media response, accomplishments, and continuing action items. Also posts the organization's charter of principles, information on related international organizations and events, and full-text of papers and reports on related social and economic topics. SUIPA: Sociedade União Internacional Protetora dos Animais (http://www.suipa.org.br/)
International Union Society for Protection of Animals, a nongovernmental, nonprofit organization. Includes links to information about SUIPA, its history, animal adoption, legislation, how to help, donations, gifts and bookmarks, news, etc. In Portuguese.

BRASA. Brazilian Studies Association (http://www.brasa.org/)
An international, interdisciplinary academic organization founded in 1992. Supports and promotes Brazilian studies in all fields–especially the humanities and social sciences–worldwide, particularly in the United States. Based at the University of New Mexico. Site includes links to membership information, details on upcoming congresses, employment opportunities, events, new publications, as well as links to electronic journals, online newspapers, and magazines. Also offers numerous links to Brazilian search engines, universities, governmental bodies, art and cultural institutions, sports clubs, etc. In English and Portuguese.

Arts and Cultural Institutes

ICOMOS Brasil. Conselho Internacional de Monumentos e Sitios (http://www.icomos.org.br/)
International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), a nongovernmental, international organization sponsored by UNESCO and headquartered in Paris. ICOMOS promotes the worldwide conservation of monuments and historic sites by professionals, volunteers, and specialists. ICOMOS/Brasil was founded in Rio de Janeiro in 1974. The site contains a list of the national council members, the council charter, list of Brazilian locations on the World Heritage list, and an agenda of upcoming events. Forum Brasileiro de ONGS e Movimentos Sociais para o Meio Ambiente e Desenvolvimento (http://www.geocities.com/rainforest/jungle/1898/)
Provides information on the forum’s history and links to periodic online circular with current news on topics of interest to NGOs and social movements concerned with the environment. Also links to the Web sites of each of its 20 member organizations. In Portuguese.

The Woman's Bank in Brazil is a nongovernmental, nonprofit organization. Its mission is to promote the human and financial development of low-income Brazilian women, creating conditions that allow their integration in the society and the development of the quality of their family, by means of the work and self-sustainment. Filantropia.org (http://www.filantropia.org/)
Philanthropy portal dedicated to increasing awareness about nongovernmental, nonprofit organizations in Brazil. Site includes the Guia da Filantropia (Philanthropy Guide) which describes the 400 largest nonprofits and their missions and provides data on their financial standing and contact information. Also sponsors and includes a link to the Premio Bem Eficiente [http://www.melhores.com.br/], a site listing the 50 winners of the annual award for the most effective/best-run nonprofits. The portal also contains a topical directory and search engine for Brazilian nonprofits, forms for online donations, and information on volunteering. Rits - Rede de Informacoes Para o Terceiro Setor (http://www.rits.org.br/)
Nonprofit organization providing information about organizations that are not fully in the private or public sector,i.e., the third sector. Also provides“democratic” access to information and knowledge technologies with the aim of increasing efficiency in that sector. Site contains a free database of organizations, projects, and people associated with the nonprofit sector, searchable by name, city, state, and other access points. Also maintains a searchable online archive of annotated citations and full-text works related to the third sector as well as links to information dealing with current and pending related legislation. UNICEF No Brasil (http://www.unicef.org/brazil/)
UNICEF (United Nations Children's Fund) in Brazil helps children get the care and stimulation they need in the early years of life and encourages families to educate girls as well as boys. Links include information about UNICEF, children's rights, statistics, news, donations, and more. Searchable. In Portuguese.
