BERRY ANNOUNCES $10 MILLION IN DEFENSE FUNDING FOR ASU

WASHINGTON, D.C. –  Congressman Marion Berry (AR-01) announced today that the 2009 Fiscal Year Defense Appropriations Bill passed the House of Representatives last night as part of H.R. 2638, “The Consolidated Security, Disaster Assistance, and Continuing Appropriations Act.” Included in the legislation were several defense research projects for ASU.

“Our men and women in uniform protect this country with honor,” said Congressman Berry. “This funding will further their mission through university research, equipment purchases and facilities construction. We must ensure that the Armed Forces are the best equipped and trained in the world.”

Included among the defense spending priorities were the following projects for ASU:

Standoff Improvised Explosive Device Detection Program (SIEDP), ASU - $4.8 million for research and development of technologies to detect improvised explosive devices (IEDs).

Standoff Hazardous Agent Detection and Evaluation System (SHADES), ASU - $2.8 million to continue developing technologies to detect explosives and hazardous chemical agents.

Biological Air Filtering System Technology (BAFST), ASU - $1.6 million for research and development of technologies to detect and filter biological and chemical threats.

Spectroscopic Materials Identification, ASU - $800,000 for ASU’s Arkansas Center for Laser Applications and Science (ArCLAS).

“I am proud of the way Arkansas’s congressional delegation worked together to secure this needed funding to continue this critical research. ASU is the perfect place to research and develop these important technologies to keep our troops safe.”
