Berry Secures Legislation to Designate the Hattie W. Caraway Post Office in Jonesboro

WASHINGTON, D.C. –  U.S. Representative Marion Berry  (D-AR, 1st) announced today that the U.S. House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly in favor of his bill to name a post office in Jonesboro after Hattie W. Caraway, the first woman elected to the U.S. Senate. The post office, located at 2404 Race Street, is scheduled to begin operations in March of 2006.

"Hattie Caraway was a true pioneer that changed the face of American politics," said Congressman Berry. "It is more than fitting that my colleagues in the U.S. House of Representatives honored her again today for the remarkable role she played in U.S. history."

Hattie W. Caraway was elected to the U.S. Senate on January 12, 1932 in a special election to finish her husband's term, and was re-elected twice by her fellow Arkansans. During her service in the U.S. Senate, Hattie Caraway became the first woman to chair a Senate Committee and the first woman to take up the gavel on the Senate floor as the Senate's presiding officer. After her defeat to William Fulbright in 1945, her Senate colleagues honored her with a standing ovation on the Senate floor.

Hattie Caraway was a resident of Jonesboro, Arkansas for nearly 50 years and recently became the first Arkansan to ever appear on a U.S. postal stamp. The new Hattie W. Caraway Station will be an expansion of the delivery annex built in 1998 and will contain 1100 PO Boxes, clerk services, a postal store, passport operations, and delivery operations.

"As Arkansans, we are proud of Hattie Caraway's accomplishments, and hope her story inspires others to pursue a career in public service," said Congressman Berry. "Thanks to her legacy, we all know what one can achieve with a little hard work and dedication."

The Postmaster for the Jonesboro area, Hillrey Adams, will relocate to the Hattie W. Caraway Station at 2404 Race Street when the facility opens in March of 2006.
