Berry Introduces Resolution to Memorialize U.S. Military Killed in Action

WASHINGTON, D.C. –  U.S. Representative Marion Berry  (D-AR, 1st) introduced a House resolution today calling on the President to require that all government buildings fly the American flag at half-staff when a member of the U.S. Armed Forces is killed in action.

"As America prepares to celebrate Independence Day, I can think of no better tribute to our men and women in uniform than passing legislation to honor the lives of those who made the ultimate sacrifice," said Congressman Berry. "By lowering the American flag to half-staff, we will remember this sacrifice and never take for granted the gift of our military heroes."

Congressman Berry was approached several months ago by a constituent in Searcy County, Arkansas who thought the U.S. government should do more to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. The final resolution calls on the President to issue an executive order ensuring that all government buildings display a proper tribute to our service-members killed in action.

Since the start of the War on Terror, the United States has lost more than 2,800 military men and women in conflict. Arkansas alone has lost 34 brave heroes, with only 12 other states in the nation reporting a greater per capita loss.

"I hope Congress rallies behind this legislation and encourages the President to make this great tribute a reality," said Congressman Berry. "Our citizens need a visual reminder every time they see the flag pass over a federal office building, a post office, or even a national park of the tremendous sacrifice that makes this country great."

Congressman Berry also has a tribute outside his Washington, DC congressional office and on his website with photos of Arkansas' fallen. The memorials stand as a memory of Arkansas' sacrifice in the War on Terror.
