Kennedy, Kerry, Markey Announce $1,455,560 Grant for Malden Redevelopment Authority
Washington, DC---Senators Edward M. Kennedy and John F. Kerry and Representative Edward J. Markey announced today that the Malden Redevelopment Authority in Malden, Massachusetts, has been awarded a federal grant of $1,455,560 under the Lead Hazard Reduction Demonstration Program of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The program provides funds to identify and eliminate lead-based paints in private rental properties. This grant will enable the Malden Redevelopment Authority to inspect 100 housing units and eliminate lead in paint, and educate owners and renters about the dangers of such paint. Melissa Wagoner, spokeswoman for Senator Kennedy said, “The Senator is pleased that Malden is receiving this grant. These funds will enable the Redevelopment Authority it to make housing much safer for low-income families by removing this dangerous and even life-threatening hazard.” “This funding will allow the Malden Redevelopment Authority to eliminate lead paint from dozens rental units. Families in the Malden area will now sleep sounder and safer at night knowing they are protected from these life-threatening dangers,” said Senator Kerry. Congressman Markey said, “As a Malden native, I am pleased that the city is receiving this important grant that will help protect our families and revitalize our existing housing stock. I commend the Malden Redevelopment Authority for their important work in this area.” ###
