KERRY, KENNEDY, MCGOVERN AND FRANK ANNOUNCE BRISTOL COMMUNITY COLLEGE TO RECEIVE $398,234

BOSTON- Senators John Kerry and Edward Kennedy, along with Congressmen James McGovern and Barney Frank today announced that Bristol Community College will receive $398,234 as part of the Department of Education's Strengthening Institutions Program.

The funding will help to create a Connected College that will be used to improve first-year students' success through fostering student engagement and retention, and improving critical thinking skills. The Connected College will enhance admissions assessment, improve connections to faculty and peers through small group orientation, engage students in creating individual learning plans with advisor support, and reshape first-year courses to improve student success.

"The Connected College program at Bristol Community College will help prepare our students to compete in today's global economy," said Senator John Kerry. "I am grateful that the Department of Education has provided the funding necessary to allow us to invest in the future of young people throughout Massachusetts."

"Senator Kennedy congratulates Bristol Community College for its leadership and dedication in reaching beyond traditional academic programs," said Melissa Wagoner, spokeswoman for Senator Kennedy. "The College is preparing its students well for the future in our constantly changing economy. Senator Kennedy is proud that this significant investment by the Department of Education will reap major benefits in the years to come for the people of the Commonwealth."

"I'm very pleased that Bristol Community College will receive this important federal funding," said Rep. Jim McGovern. "In the 21st Century economy, we must do all we can to ensure that students have the best opportunity to succeed in college."

"I am pleased that BCC will be receiving funds for establishment of this innovative project to assist first year students. This grant award underscores the importance of keeping federal education program well funded, and working for that goal will continue to be a top priority for me in Congress," said Congressman Barney Frank.

"The Connected College will bring powerful tools to Bristol Community College," said John J. Sbrega, Ph.D., President of BCC. "It will take advantage of the latest in technology to connect first-year students to their learning, to the College, and to each other. It addresses a common issue in higher education -- keeping first-year students in college. Student retention is among our highest priorities. This innovative project will improve student success by connecting our beginning students to the College in those critically important first months and by providing faculty and staff with professional development that will further strengthen the student experience here. Thanks to this grant, the BCC Connected College will be a model for others to replicate. The College is grateful for the opportunity it brings to southeastern Massachusetts and to our students."
