Kerry, Kennedy, Delahunt Announce $1.2 million federal grant for WHOI
Funding will provide early warning system for scientists, fishermen and coastal residents
BOSTON- Senators John Kerry and Edward Kennedy and Congressman William Delahunt today announced the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) has been awarded a $1,199,787 grant from the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration. The funding will allow WHOI to create integrated ocean observing systems, enabling researchers to develop a more complete understanding of the working of oceans and provide more timely information on water quality, weather conditions and fishery levels to scientists, fishermen and coastal residents. "Earlier detection of severe weather will reduce the risks to life and property from storms and flooding," Senator Kerry said. "This funding will also allow WHOI to monitor 'red tide' and the health of vital fishing grounds, giving business owners and government officials more time to prepare for and address potential problems." "Gaining a better understanding of our vital coastal resources is essential to preserving the extraordinary benefits they provide for all of us in Massachusetts, and I commend Woods Hole for its leadership. This federal funding is well-deserved," said Senator Kennedy. "The information age has come to ocean science and Woods Hole is leading the way,” said Congressman Bill Delahunt. “Funding for this comprehensive ocean observing system is not only recognition of WHOI’s important role in the development of these new ocean management systems, but our region’s position as a world leader in marine science and technology.” ###
