KERRY, KENNEDY, CAPUANO AND LYNCH ANNOUNCE BOSTON TO RECEIVE MORE THAN $8 MILLION FOR FORECLOSURE COUNSELING

BOSTON – Senators John Kerry and Edward Kennedy, along with Congressmen Michael Capuano and Stephen Lynch, today announced that four Boston companies will receive federal funding to provide counseling to families and individuals facing the threat of foreclosure. The Housing Partnership Network will receive $7,429,993; Citizens’ Housing and Planning Association will receive $249,272; Neighborhood of Affordable Housing will receive $141,203; and Urban Edge Housing Corporation will receive $45,124.

All four programs work to build strong, healthy neighborhoods through homeownership.

"At a time when the American housing market continues to decline, these programs are bringing some peace of mind to those who need it most,” said Senator Kerry. “The new funds will allow programs like these to provide financial counseling to thousands of Massachusetts homeowners who may be facing foreclosure or trying to buy a home for the first time."

“It’s unconscionable that so many families across Massachusetts are being forced out of their homes because of the foreclosure crisis,” said Senator Kennedy. “It’s essential that we do all we can to help families work out reasonable payment schedules and stay in their homes. This funding is a worthwhile step, but it is far from enough.”

“The counseling programs made possible by this federal funding will help to provide guidance and assistance for families facing foreclosure,” stated Congressman Mike Capuano.

“As the housing market continues to decline and foreclosure rates continue to rise, it is vital that we take long-term as well as immediate actions to help those faced with foreclosures in the next year. From my experience during our 9th District foreclosure prevention workshop, educating those facing foreclosure on the options now available to them is critical in keeping families in their homes. Senator Kerry’s plan for funding these educational programs in Massachusetts is one essential element to stanch the effects on everyday citizens of the hemorrhaging housing markets,” said Congressman Lynch.

NeighborWorks America, a program created by Congress in 1978, is providing the funding to more than 700 counseling agencies nationwide. Programs in Massachusetts will receive more than $23 million.
