Boston- Senator John Kerry today announced that Massachusetts Institute of Technology will receive two U.S. Department of Energy grants totaling $1,799,998 to fund research into next generation solar technology. The school will receive $900,000 to fund a project seeking to boost the performance of conventional solar cells and $899,998 to support research on silicon wafer-making technology that would set new standards of electronic quality and cost.

 
"Americans realize what's at stake if we don't work together and confront global climate change," Senator Kerry said. "It is essential that our country breaks its addiction to fossil fuels and takes advantage of renewable, clean energy sources. This funding will allow researchers at MIT to create more efficient, more cost effective solar power technology and give more Americans access to renewable energy."
