Kerry on Coast Guard's recommendation against LNG facility in Fall River
BOSTON – Senator John Kerry today issued the following statement about the Coast Guard’s recommendation against a Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) facility in Fall River. The Coast Guard reached the conclusion, after exhaustive study, that the waterway is “unsuitable for LNG traffic due to navigational safety challenges” and that the risk of mishap is “unacceptably high.” “This latest ruling could mean victory for the people of Fall River and folks up and down the Narragansett and Mount Hope Bays who have battled to stop this terminal. The Coast Guard has spoken in favor of common sense and public safety. These huge tankers could’ve invited a disaster. It’s great news that the Coast Guard realizes these dangers. We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again - this LNG terminal should never have been proposed, should never have gone forward, and Senator Kennedy, Congressman Frank and I will continue to do everything in our power to make sure this dangerous proposal is defeated once and for all,” said Senator Kerry.
