Kerry, Kennedy announce $400,000 federal grant for Lowell National Historic Park

Boston – Senators John Kerry and Edward Kennedy today announced that the Lowell National Historic Park will receive $409,650 from the U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Transit Administration to fund the National Park's alternative transportation systems. The funding will allow the Lowell National Historic Park to upgrade the energy efficiency of its tram system and improve the overall visitor experience.

"The Lowell National Historic Park gives Massachusetts residents and visitors from around the world the opportunity to step back in time and get a better sense of how difficult life could be for the thousands of mill workers who helped make Lowell an international textile hub," Senator Kerry said. "This funding will allow the Park Service to create a more environmentally-friendly tour while still providing a very user-friendly experience for visitors. I commend the Department of Transportation for investing in Lowell and making sure that more people have a chance to learn the city's remarkable history."

"I'm delighted that the park is receiving this important federal amount to improve its transit system," said Senator Kennedy. "The funds will improve access to the park by transits, and help to make the transit system more environmentally friendly."
