Boston – Senators John Kerry and Edward Kennedy today announced that the Boston Harbor Islands National Recreation Area will receive $100,000 from the U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Transit Administration. The funding will allow the National Park Service to rehabilitate the Ferry Hub Pier on Georges Island. 

 
"Georges Island welcomes thousands of Massachusetts school children every year who marvel at the island's ecological beauty and have a blast exploring Fort Warren," Senator Kerry said. "This funding will allow the Park Service to ensure that the ferry pier is structurally sound and capable of handling the rush of seasonal visitors. I commend the Department of Transportation for helping to make sure that Georges Island remains accessible to all who want to visit it."

 
"The Harbor Islands are among our nation's greatest treasures, and these funds will make them more accessible to increasing numbers of visitors" said Senator Kennedy. "Georges Island is a vital part of Boston's maritime history and an appealing destination for recreation and tourism. We owe it to future generations to keep the pier in good condition".
