Kerry: Bush Administration must take immediate action to ensure low-income Americans aren't left out in cold this winter

New England consumers could pay up to 22% more to heat homes

BOSTON – Senator John Kerry today released the following statement on the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s (EIA) estimate that some Massachusetts consumers will pay up to 22% more to warm their homes this winter.

“Before another cold New England winter, Washington needs to prepare for the soaring home heating costs that will hurt Massachusetts’ low-income families. With heating costs expected to go through the roof this winter, it is unthinkable that this Administration would fail to have the emergency funds available to help families who need it most,” said Senator Kerry. “No one should have to worry where their next meal is coming from or risk going without medical care just so they can heat their homes. Unfortunately, without help, many senior citizens and low income families may have to make those painful choices this winter. The administration needs to take the initiative NOW to make sure millions throughout Massachusetts and the rest of New England literally aren’t left in the cold.”

The EIA says heating oil will be the most expensive fuel, followed by propane, natural gas and electricity.
