Kerry Says Bush Climate Conference is Useless without Mandatory Caps on Emissions
September meeting will be "more of the same"
WASHINGTON D.C. - Sen. John Kerry issued the following statement today, in response to the White House announcement this morning that President Bush will convene a climate change conference in September with 15 countries and the United Nations. Although the stated goal of reducing greenhouse gases is a good one, Kerry pointed out that Bush has repeatedly refused to agree to any serious reductions in emissions and has actively worked to subvert government efforts to reduce pollution.
"It'd be great if this meeting was actually going to produce some positive outcomes but I fear it will be more of the same," Kerry said. "There are dozens of ways this administration could take productive steps on climate change, but simply restating goals without taking the steps necessary to implement them is a recipe for failure. We need binding emissions targets across the economy and across borders. Our only hope is that this president, who just a few years ago was questioning the science behind climate change, may wake up one day and finally decide he is ready to lead on this critical issue."
