Kerry urges passage of National Commission on Infrastructure legislation
Boston- Senator John Kerry today announced he is co-sponsoring legislation introduced by Senator Tom Carper to create a National Commission on Infrastructure. The Commission would develop a long-term plan to improve the state of America’s infrastructure and ensure that it meets rigorous safety standards. "Wednesday’s tragedy in Minneapolis is a sobering reminder of the lack of investment and attention given to our nation’s bridges and roads," Senator Kerry said. "In this country, bridges shouldn’t simply collapse. The American Society of Civil Engineers’ gave bridges a 'C' in its 2005 Report Card due to the lack of funding available to repair them. This is unacceptable. Today I have co-sponsored legislation that creates a National Commission on Infrastructure which will issue recommendations to help develop a plan to repair and maintain the nation’s roads, bridges, and dams. In light of the heartbreaking bridge collapse in Minneapolis, Congress should quickly pass this legislation and help ensure that a tragedy of this scale never happens again and I intend to work hard with my colleagues to bring this issue to the forefront as quickly as possible." ###
