Kerry Says Votes Show "Even Republicans Concede Bush Iraq Policy Must Change"
Washington, D.C. - Senator John Kerry (D-Mass.) today issued the following statement following the Senate's votes on Iraq - on legislation setting a deadline of March 31, 2008 for troop redeployment from Iraq and on removing assistance if the Iraqis do not meet certain benchmarks:
"Today's votes are an important step forward. Even Republicans concede that the Bush Iraq policy must change. We've made it clear that if this President will not change a deadly and dangerous course, Congress will provide the leadership to force his hand.
"Last year, Senator Feingold and I stood with 11 Senators for a firm one year deadline to force the Iraqis to find a political solution and redeploy our troops. The number of Democratic and Republican Senators who agree that we must have benchmarks and timelines, continues to grow. Our troops have done their job in Iraq. Now it's time for the President to listen to Congress and our generals, change course and redeploy our troops. We must hold Iraqis accountable, and insist on a policy equal to our soldiers' sacrifice."
