JUNE 9, 1999 

(Washington, DC) – Senate Governmental Affairs Chairman Fred Thompson (R-TN) and Ranking Member Joseph Lieberman (D-CT) today announced the Committee will hold a hearing on dual-use and munitions list export control issues relating to the Department of Energy (DOE). The hearing will be held on Thursday, June 10, 1999, at 10:00 a.m. in Room 342 of the Dirksen Senate Office Building.

In August 1998, Senator Thompson and the Governmental Affairs Committee requested the Inspectors General of six government agencies, including DOE, to conduct an interagency investigation of the licensing process for dual-use items and munitions. Specifically, the Inspector General will address deficiencies in the exchange agreements which bring foreign national scientists to DOE weapons labs.

The Department of Energy Inspector General is the first office to complete their portion of this investigation; their findings in this regard will be the subject of the June 10 hearing.

Witnesses will include officials from the Office of the Inspector General at the Department of Energy.
