Congressman Sherman on the Passing of Congressman Tom Lantos

Washington, D.C. - Congressman Brad Sherman, a senior member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee (and Chairman of its Subcommittee on Terrorism, Non-Proliferation, and Trade) today released the following statement regarding the passing of Congressman Tom Lantos, Chairman of the U.S. House Representatives Committee on Foreign Relations:

“I am deeply saddened by the passing of Tom Lantos.  I served with him for more than a decade, both as members of the California delegation and of the Foreign Affairs Committee.

Congressman Tom Lantos not only made history in Washington, he was a living witness to history, having survived the Holocaust and fought in the anti-Nazi underground during World War II.  His personal history added to the gravitas of everything he said and did.  Tom was our nation’s most passionate, eloquent and respected advocate for human rights, democracy, and freedom.  Tom never bowed to political pressure in the face of any humanitarian atrocity.

The passing of Tom Lantos is a profound loss for me, the Congress, our nation and the world. My thoughts and prayers are with his wife Annette and the entire Lantos family.”
