Bestowed faith
Published:

In "Another Side of War" (Dec. 19) John Morgan in true liberal, God-hating form blames someone else, God, for the trouble we bring ourselves. By the written word we understand God created us in his own image. Now, pay attention to this next part, and gave us free will.
Free will means we make our own choices, good or bad, as a society and as individuals. He is treating us as equals and would no sooner impose his will on us than Morgan and his like would have me tell him to get his facts right before blindly spouting outrage and misinformation. God gave us all the power to prevent all wars. We just have to use it!
It is interesting to see that Morgan professes to know the prayers of the dead and that they were unanswered. The only serious and lingering questions here: What was Morgan's great loss causing his crisis of faith? Was it worse than seeing Jesus murdered on the cross?
When will people stop blaming God for their loss of faith and accept the gifts and responsibilities that come with the power bestowed on us by an all powerful and loving God?
Victor Catlett, Broken Arrow

Mr. Catlett,
So … in your estimation a "true liberal" is someone who hates God and blames God for everything that's wrong in the world?
Have I summarized your view accurately? That's a truly remarkable conclusion!
Feeling that way, your life must be painful and burdensome. My condolences.

Well, I'm a liberal and a christian. I am not a "killer ape", as evolutionists argue. Many of the early hominoid remains, found in the fossil record are incomplete and the missing pieces are crafted by speculation. I find it difficult to understand why there isn't more archeological proof of ancent societies, language and writing, unless our brains just developed in the last fifty thousand years. Go to the mall and sit in the food court, you will be confronted by what appears to be a reverse in human evolution there in my opinion.

Interesting that one comment suggest that people that believe in the bible take up a hobby and another comment wonders why this letter was published. Meanwhile, our government continues to waste billions on sending out signals into space to make contact with people you or I have never seen in the name of science, yet two writers commenting on this letter belittle others that believe in a supreme being that we have never seen either. Pot calling the kettle black. I agree with Angry citizen, we are in reverse evolution.

BB, is that a woman wearing niqab, or a woman wearing hijab and covering her face with her hand? Either way, nice you're showing some modesty, compared to your earlier avatars. ;)
Mr. Catlett, what's your point? Religion is supposed to be personal. If others disagree with your beliefs, then they disagree. Move on.

Mr. Catlett states that God gave us "free will." When God sent his son to die for our sins, did Judas have a "free will" when he turned Jesus over to the Romans? Or, was Judas programed, by God, to turn Jesus over to the Romans. When President Bush fabricated a war against Iraq, did our soldiers that he sent -- and many of whom died -- have the "free will" not to participate in that unjustified war? "Free will" is an illusion -- we are all creatures of our cultures and behave accordingly. If God can prevent war --and "he" doesn't -- "he's" certainly not a loving God. Soldiers following order don't have "free will" -- if they did, a military operation, using such soldiers, would not be possible.

Peelumba,
RE: "blah, blah, blah, do you thumpers ever get tired of quoting a book of fiction? "
What the world needs is more "Thumpers"!
With Relativism, pragmatism, skepticism ,existentialism and humanism being the main cancers attacking the moral fiber of our society It's time, high time, that WE "Thumpers" never cease to THUMP and THUMP Loudly

If free will is such an important part of christianity, why is it so important for christians to impose their will on others and therefore nullify others' "free will"?
Thumpers have the best belief system in the world. No matter what happens, they'll have an answer that purportedly comes from god in order to get their way. GWB actually that god is on our side in the war in Iraq.
If "free will to choose" is a god given gift, then let us all enjoy it and quit trying to prove that you're right.

If you want to see a good example of imposing one's will on others, feel free to review what's emminating from the Middle East these days.
It's a heck of a lot more imposing than a nativity
scene.

I agree Mr. Brown, and that's what I fear about the mix of religion and political ambition. What you see is what you get, fanaticism and turmoil.
Those who can tell you what god is saying are usually just trying to get you to agree with them to validate their opinion.
When the fight is over whose god is bigger, nobody wins.

actually, kerugma and bb,
the world is full of "thumpers" that is the biggest problem we as a society face. Religion is the root cause of the world's ills. Get rid of this "my god is better and my religion is the only correct one", then maybe we could just be people and get along!

The bible says we are created in God's image.
If that is true,it's not hard to believe that maybe God isn't always paying attention when one thousand or one hundred thousand human beings get wiped out,or your wife comes down with cancer,or one of your kids dies in a car accident.
We humans do that all the time.
Maybe we're not on the top of his list?

ANYTHING can be twisted to contradict it's meaning or intended purpose, that's why you have Federal warnings on chemicals. Unfortunately, while there will always be bad people leading some dumb ones astray, that does not speak for the spirit or intent of God's message. It's definately one part of why we have as many people getting along as we do now.
Peelumba,
would you care to share the names of a few
charities set up by athiests for the poor and displaced? There are many set up, in the name of God, and they're doing good things for people.
You seem to have no religion, yet your ability to get along with a person that does is not evident in your posts. That suggests to me that having no God isn't going to make a person any easier to get along with than a person that does...

That is exactly what alienates so much people. Bible-thumpers going out of their way to pick and choose which Bible passages they wish to follow. I'm sure there is a Supreme Being, but I cannot be convinced to believe in organized religion. There is a God, I don't doubt that, but I follow the belief that God is too big to fit into anyone religion. Why can't we simply be left alone to believe, or not believe, the way we choose to? Who says we all have to follow the same path?

I'm very curious about your post. You're a Unitarian, if my memory serves me. How do you know what your Supreme Being expects of you, if
you aren't reading a Bible of some sort?
Where does Christ fit in, and if he doesn't, how can you reconcile this with your statement of picking and choosing?
