HSF's Regional Offices

Hispanics comprise the largest racial/ethnic minority in the nation with the fastest growing demographic of younger workers. Between 2000 and 2005 the U.S. Hispanic population grew from 12.5 percent of the overall population to about 14 percent. All indications suggest this trend will continue.  As of 2005, the U.S. Census Bureau estimates over 42 million Hispanics were living in the United States. The Bureau projects this number will increase to 63 million by the year 2030.

Responding to the higher education needs of this fast growing population, HSF continues to expand its programs and outreach activities. Through HSF, Latino students and their families receive the tools, information and mentoring to make higher education an accessible and affordable reality. In line with its goal to double the rate of Hispanics earning a college degree to 18 percent by 2010, HSF, headquartered in San Francisco, has opened regional offices in cities with high concentrations of Hispanics. These regional offices will collaborate with HSF’s national outreach programs, to break the cycle of under-education in the Hispanic community. Regional staff will host town hall meetings, participate in college fairs, inform high school counselors and other educational leaders about HSF initiatives and serve as a local contact for HSF Scholars.

Additionally, HSF regional staff will work to increase awareness in the Latino community of the importance of earning a college degree and explain HSF’s initiatives designed to help make graduating from college a reality. The regional staff will also work with the local business community and individuals to build ownership at a grassroots level for HSF’s mission.

Funding for these regional offices was provided by a $12.3 million landmark grant by Lilly Endowment Inc.
