Senator Clinton Accepts National Farmers Union 2008 Golden Triangle Award

Clinton presented with Organization's highest legislative award for Commitment to America's family farmers, Ranchers and Rural Communities

WASHINGTON, DC—Hillary Rodham Clinton today accepted the National Farmers Union’s highest legislative award, the 2008 Golden Triangle Award for leadership on issues important to America’s family farmers, ranchers and rural communities.

“Tackling the needs of our rural communities and preserving our family farms are essential components to the success of our economy and the health of our citizens. I am honored to receive the National Farmers Union 2008 Golden Triangle award, however I know there is much to be done to ensure that our rural communities are provided with the necessary resources to meet the challenges of the 21st century. I will continue to work with my colleagues in Congress, the National Farmers Union and organizations throughout New York State to increase market opportunities for small farmers, protect the quality and safety of our agricultural products and expand access to quality, affordable health care to residents living in rural communities.” said Senator Clinton.

“We are pleased to recognize Senator Clinton for her commitment to addressing the challenges we face in rural America, consistently supporting positions that will improve the quality of life for America’s family farmers, ranchers and rural communities. I thank her for her leadership,” NFU President Tom Buis said.

The Golden Triangle Award is based on NFU’s symbol – a triangle with “legislation” and “cooperation” forming the sides and “education” the base. The Golden Triangle Awards have been presented annually since 1988. This year’s golden triangle recipients were selected for their leadership on a variety of issues, including: support for the 2008 Farm Bill, implementing mandatory country-of-origin labeling (COOL), increasing the use and production of fuels from the farm, addressing food safety concerns, support for fair trade and agriculture’s role in addressing climate change.

Senator Clinton has been a tireless advocate for agriculture in New York and around the country. Senator Clinton has worked to strengthen her “Farm to Fork” initiative that underscore new legislation and projects aimed at expanding healthy and local food, promoting more food retail outlets and direct to consumer marketing, strengthening the COOL law and creating more rural development, including expanded access to broadband.
