October 15, 2006
Honolulu, HI - U.S. Senator Daniel K. Akaka issued the following statement regarding today’s earthquake that struck Hawaii. “My thoughts and prayers go out to those directly affected by today’s earthquake. Millie and I are extremely grateful that no fatalities have been reported at this time.“This afternoon I spoke with FEMA Director R. David Paulison to convey the urgency of the situation in Hawaii and the need for immediate federal assistance. Undersecretary Paulison assured me that FEMA is supporting State emergency response activities and that FEMA search-and-rescue and medical teams are ready to be deployed. “Tomorrow Senator Inouye and I will join the National Guard to fly over the Big Island and survey the damage.”
