Senator Akaka to Present Gold Medal of Remembrance to Daughters of Fallen Army Sgt. Eugene Williams

July 3, 2006

Honolulu, HI - Tomorrow, as America celebrates Independence Day, U.S. Senators Daniel K. Akaka and Daniel Inouye will present 6-year-old Mya and 3-year-old Monica Williams the Gold Medal of Remembrance in honor of their father Army Sgt. Eugene Williams.

The presentation will take place at St. Christopher’s Church in Kailua at 9:00 a.m. The two girls and their mother Brandy Dela Cruz Williams, of Waipahu, will join the Senators in Kailua’s 60th Annual 4th of July Parade.

Congress established the White House Commission on Remembrance to honor the sacrifices of America’s fallen and the families they left behind. The Gold Medal is presented to children whose parents were lost during service to their country as a symbol of optimism and high achievement.

On May 25, 2006, Senator Akaka met with Brandy, Mya and Monica Williams in Washington, D.C. At that time, Senator Akaka reflected on Sgt. Williams’ ultimate sacrifice to our country and thanked the Williams.

Sgt. Williams, of Highland, N.Y., was serving with the 3rd Infantry Division in Iraq when he was killed by a suicide bomber posing as a taxi driver on March 29, 2003.

Senator Akaka is co-chair of the U.S. Senate Army Caucus and Ranking Member on the Armed Services Subcommittee on Readiness and Management Support.

The Gold Medal of Remembrance ceremony begins at 9:00 a.m. TOMORROW, July 4th, at Kailua’s St. Christopher’s Church located at 93 N. Kainalu Drive.
