Hearing Explores Mental Wounds of War with Veterans, Top VA Officials, and Mental Health Experts

On Wednesday, August 22nd at 10:30PM PT and again on Thursday, August 23rd at 1:00 PM PT, TVW, Washington State's public affairs network, will air the official U.S. Senate Veterans Affairs Committee Hearing that U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) chaired last Friday in Tacoma. The hearing includes testimony from Washington state Iraq and Vietnam Veterans on dealing with the mental wounds of war as well as testimony from regional VA officials and mental health experts on their response to the current mental health care crisis.

The hearing investigates the impact of the current conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan on service members and their families, the diagnosis and treatment of mental health disorders by both the Department of Defense and the VA, the troubling rise in the suicide rate of active duty Army soldiers, and the readiness of both the service and the civilian communities to meet these needs and challenges our service members face when they return home.

Senator Murray has been at the forefront of the issue of veterans' mental health and has fought for increased investments in mental health funding in the federal budget and veterans spending bills.
