Federal Museum Grants Awarded to Laupahoehoe Train Museum in Hamakua and Waioli Corporation in Lihue

July 17, 2008

Washington, D.C. - The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) has informed U.S. Senator Daniel K. Akaka of federal grants to two Hawaii museums.  IMLS will award a Museums of America (MOA) grant of $125,400 to the Laupahoehoe Train Museum on the Hamakua Coast of the Big Island to strengthen its educational outreach and community awareness through projects developed around the theme, "Highlighting of Hawaii's Railroads," including programming on railroad, plantation, and cultural history, and a production of a short DVD.  Senator Akaka wrote a letter in strong support of the grant application in December of last year.  In addition, IMLS will award Waioli Corporation in Lihue a $52,783 MOA grant to begin a digital equipment and archiving project to digitize all its museums' historical records, which include missionary, sugar plantation, Wilcox family, Kauai Public Health nursing, and Hawaiian government documents.

"I appreciate the tireless dedication by community members over the past decade to tell the story of the railroad, which played a significant role in the rich plantation history of Hamakua Coast. Given the community's success in preserving this important part of their heritage, I am confident that this grant will go a long way," Akaka said.  "I was also pleased to hear a grant was awarded that will preserve the Wilcox family treasures on Kauai."

Director
Institute of Museums and Library Services

Dear Dr. Radice:

I am writing in strong support of an application submitted by the Laupahoehoe Train Museum to the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) for a grant under the Museums for America program (CFDA 45.301).

For the past decade, dedicated community volunteers have worked tirelessly to tell the story of the railroad, which played a significant role in the rich history of the Hamakua Coast heritage corridor on the Big Island of Hawaii.  Housed in the original station agent's residence and standing on the site of the train station landing dock, the Laupahoehoe Train Museum captures the essence of the plantation era when trains were the primary mode of transport for the sugar cane industry.  The success of the museum is the result of the hard work and dedication of numerous volunteers and local businesses.  Financial support has come from admissions, donations, and membership.  A few projects, such as the restoration of the railroad track, engine, and caboose, were funded by grants.

This grant will help the community move to the next level in their support of the museum by funding one full time program coordinator whose responsibilities would include creating educational programming, such as DVDs and other learning materials, to be shared with the public and community schools.  The program coordinator would also oversee other operational aspects of the museum.

Given the community's success in preserving this important part of Hamakua's heritage, I am confident that the modest funding requested by the Laupahoehoe Train Museum will result in far reaching dividends not only for the community but for all of Hawaii.  I would appreciate your favorable consideration of this grant application.  Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Aloha pumehana,
DANIEL K. AKAKA
U.S. Senator
