September 11, 2008
WASHINGTON, DC - Today, U.S. Senators Daniel K. Akaka and Daniel K. Inouye announced that the Transportation Security Administration will be opening a temporary Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) enrollment center in Kona. Currently, West Hawaii workers who require a TWIC card for unescorted access to secure maritime facilities and vessels must drive to Hilo to enroll. This includes United States Coast Guard-credentialed merchant mariners, port facility employees, long shore workers, truck drivers, and others. Workers should contact their employers to determine if they need this credential.
Location: TWIC Enrollment Center Kona Coast The Charter Desk at Honokohau Marina 74-381 Kealakehe Parkway Kailua Kona, HI 96740 Hours of Operation: September 15th: 1:00 PM - 6:00 PM September 16th & 17th: 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM
TWIC cards are required by the Maritime Transportation Security Act of 2002. The TWIC is a tamper-resistant credential that contains a worker's biometric information to positively establish his or her identity.
