Majority Leader Hoyer’s Statement on Legislation Reiterating the Intent of the ADA

WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (MD), the lead House sponsor of the landmark, bipartisan Americans With Disabilities Act, released the following statement today as the House Judiciary and Education and Labor committees prepared to markup the “ADA Amendments Act of 2008" (H.R. 3195) on Wednesday.  The bill is designed to address controversial Supreme Court decisions on the ADA:

“I want to thank Chairmen Conyers and Miller and Congressman Sensenbrenner, the former Chair of the Judiciary Committee, for their commitment and leadership on this important legislation.  This bill reflects a collaborative effort by policy makers and leaders in the disability and business communities to craft a bill that will preserve the rights of citizens with disabilities as intended in the original ADA law.

“Over the last several years, the Supreme Court has adopted a strained interpretation of the ADA that has led to decisions that severely narrow the scope of the law and that run counter to Congress’s intent when it was enacted.  This new legislation addresses those decisions and reiterates our strong support for provisions and intent of the ADA.  Following committee action, it is my intention to move quickly to bring this important civil rights legislation to the House Floor.”
