HOYER JOINS HISPANIC CAUCUS IN CELEBRATING HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH

WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) has joined with Rep. Ciro Rodriguez (D-TX), chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, Hispanic leaders, and millions of Americans across the country to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, which is observed from September 15th through October 15th.  Rep. Hoyer, who will attend two events this week in honor of National Hispanic Month, today released the following statement:

“America’s strength as a nation lies in the diversity and heritage of its citizens, and the Hispanic community, which numbers almost 40 million, is one of the largest and most vibrant in the country.  This month, I am proud to join my Congressional colleagues during Hispanic Heritage Month in paying tribute to the numerous contributions Latinos have made in shaping America’s culture and achievements.

“From education to economic development, from civic action to corporate leadership, Latinos play an integral role in our communities.  Like many minority groups, Latinos have fought discrimination and overcome barriers to become small business owners, doctors, lawyers, teachers, CEOs, professional athletes, governors, members of Congress and Cabinet Secretaries.  Hispanic culture has enriched American life and society with its language, art, and strong focus on family and tradition.

“Latinos are America’s largest and fastest growing minority group, and they will have the power to decide the outcomes of many local, state, and federal elections across the country.  However, long before it became a political powerhouse, the Democratic Party’s priorities have reflected those of the Latino community.  We know that Hispanic voters, like millions of Americans, understand that Democratic leaders have a pro-active agenda to promote economic prosperity, education, health care and immigration reform, and to protect our national security.  

“As we mark this important observance, I hope that all of us will take some time this month to learn more about the many facets of Hispanic culture and celebrate the achievements of Hispanics nationwide.”
