COMMENT OF U.S. SENATOR DANIEL K. AKAKA ON THE ARMY'S DECISION TO STATION A STRYKER BRIGADE IN HAWAII

July 7, 2004

Washington, D.C. - U.S. Senator Daniel K. Akaka (D-Hawaii), Ranking Member of the Senate Armed Services Subcommittee on Readiness and Management Support, issued the following comment after receiving notification from LTG James Campbell that he had signed the Record of Decision for the stationing of the Stryker Brigade in Hawaii:

"I am pleased to learn of the decision to transform the 2nd Brigade, 25th Infantry Division (Light) to a Stryker Brigade. I support efforts to transform today's military to meet the threats of the 21st century. As the Ranking Member of the Senate Armed Services Subcommittee on Readiness and Management Support which has jurisdiction over environmental compliance by the Department of Defense, I firmly believe that a balance can be obtained between preserving Hawaii's natural and cultural resources and meeting our military's training needs for the purpose of ensuring the security of the State of Hawaii and the United States."
