HOYER STATEMENT ON ELECTION ASSISTANCE COMMISSION TRANSPORTATION-TREASURY HEARING

WASHINGTON – House Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer released the following statement at the House Transportation-Treasury Committee Hearing with the Election Assistance Commission (EAC):

“As the lead House Democratic sponsor of the Help America Vote Act (HAVA), which established the Election Assistance Commission, I am pleased the House Transportation, Treasury Appropriations subcommittee is holding today's hearing regarding the new Election Assistance Commission.

“I strongly support the EAC's budget request for $10 million as provided by HAVA and urge my colleagues on the committee to support it as well.

“HAVA created the EAC to help prevent another election debacle like the 2000 election.  It will serve as a national clearinghouse and identify best practices and procedures for state and local election officials to use to guarantee the accuracy of elections.  These best practices should also help alleviate some of the recent concerns with the security of voting systems.

“Finally, I want to stress that it is critical for the health of our democracy that Congress support full funding for the EAC so that it can work to maintain the highest level of confidence in this nation's voting process.”
