Senator Kerry urges Governor Romney to join him in requesting that SBA Issue Disaster Declaration in Danvers
Senator John Kerry, incoming Chairman of the Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship, today sent a letter to Governor Mitt Romney urging the Governor to join him in requesting the Small Business Administration issue physical and economic injury disaster declarations as a result of today’s explosion in Danvers.

Dear Governor Romney:
As incoming Chair of the Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship, I am writing to urge you to join me in requesting that the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) issue physical and economic injury disaster declarations on behalf of the hundreds of business owners and residents of Danvers, Massachusetts who have been affected by the explosion at the CAI Incorporated chemical plant, which occurred during the early morning of November 22, 2006. As Governor, a physical disaster declaration can be issued at your request, and your efforts would be instrumental in certifying the need for an economic injury disaster declaration as well. The declarations will allow residents and business owners to obtain low-interest loans from the SBA to rebuild their homes and to keep their businesses open during this time of crisis.
As you know, the plant explosion is reported to have either leveled or severely damaged nearly seventy-five homes and destroyed multiple businesses, leaving the area surrounding the plant in a state of severe economic and physical distress.
We hope that you will make this request and provide the necessary state certification of areas hurt by this chemical plant explosion to help small businesses in Massachusetts survive.
