Geography & Environment : Guyana

This pathfinder contains basic information about Guyana's geography and environment. The Handbook is available in selected libraries in book form. Describes projects of the International Institute of Entomology (IIE) regarding biodiversity in Guyana. Includes information on insects and logging, insects and natural gaps, and the rodent project. Offers access to images, reference resources, staff lists, and related institutions.

Biological Diversity of the Guianas (BDG)  (http://www.mnh.si.edu/biodiversity/bdg/)
The Biological Diversity of the Guianas (BDG) is a field-oriented program of the Department of Systematic Biology - Botany, National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution. The goal of the BDG is to study, document and preserve the biological diversity of the Guianas. It has a link to BDG Publications and Resources, information on Guyana Symposium 2001 and the Centre for the Study of Biological Diversity.

The Evironmental Protection Agency (EPA) was created to promote, facilitate and coordinate effective environmental management and protection; and the sustainable use of Guyana's natural resources. Its official website focuses on biodiversity research, education and awareness, coastal zone management, national protected areas, environmental and wildlife management.

The Guyana Marine Turtle Conservation Society (GMTCS) - working with local communities near Shell Beach, Guyana, to raise awareness of and promote community-based wildlife management of marine turtles.

Sea turtles of the Guianas  (http://purl.fcla.edu/fcla/dl/UF00001527.jpg)
Early accounts of sea turtles nesting in northeastern South America mention both Surinam and Cayenne (Guyane). The occurrence of sea turtles in the waters and on the beaches of the Guianas was known much earlier than this. A map of Surinam drawn in 1670 indicates this along with a few modern references to the turtle populations nesting on this coast.
