Early accounts of sea turtles nesting in northeastern South America mention both Surinam and Cayenne (Guyane). The occurrence of sea turtles in the waters and on the beaches of the Guianas was known much earlier than this. A map of Surinam drawn in 1670 indicates this along with a few modern references to the turtle populations nesting on this coast.
