Senator Murray Helps Pass Federal Spending for Washington State EmergenciesPresident threatens to veto funding for salmon, flooded highways, rural school districts, Hanford, health care access, and veterans
(Washington, D.C.) – Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, helped pass emergency spending legislation that includes help for some of Washington state's most urgent problems. The legislation passed the Senate by a veto-proof majority of 75-22.
The legislation passed today will now be considered by the House of Representatives and will likely be combined with funding for the wars in Iraq an Afghanistan and sent to the President. President Bush has threatened to veto any funding for domestic emergencies included with war funding. A new G.I. Bill to provide educational assistance benefits for service members who have served on active duty since September 11, 2001, including activated reservists and National Guard was included in the legislation. Senator Murray is a co-sponsor of the new G.I. Bill.
