Alexander Says U.S.–India Nuclear Agreement Will Be a Pillar of American Foreign Policy
Encouraging Clean Energy Will Help Combat Global Climate Change

October 1st, 2008 - WASHINGTON - U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) released the following statement today following the Senate’s approval of the legislation to implement the U.S.-India nuclear cooperation agreement:

“In this new century, there may be no more important two-country relationship than the one between the United States and India. This legislation puts us on a path to a strategic partnership between the U.S. and India that will be a pillar of American foreign policy for generations to come,” Alexander said. “Furthering the development of nuclear power is good for India and good for the United States as we work to ensure an adequate supply of energy while limiting worldwide emissions of greenhouse gases that contribute to climate change and other pollutants.”

The United States-India Nuclear Cooperation Approval and Nonproliferation Enhancement Act (H.R. 7081) passed the Senate by a vote of 86 to 13. It now goes to the President for his signature.
